Got your web site from Jan and have to say your work as amazing!
Seeing what you have carved using found wood is truly inspiring
to me, as that is also what I love to carve! You have a wonderful
imagination and superb talent to be able to capture all the feelings
that show up in your carvings.
I thank Jan for emailing me your site and I hope to see more of
your work!!!

Dorsey, you are the finest sculptor in North America. Your art lives
and breathes through the wood with power akin to that of Michelangelo's
David, yet instead of speaking of individual power - power over/suffer
under - it teaches of collective power and wisdom to build a world
where we can walk in beauty together. I wonder what you would and
could do if you had access to a huge chunk of one of Northern New
Zealand's ancient, prehistoric trees

Dorsey!
We went to the AGNS the other day. There was an exhibition of works
by that other great sculptor. You know who I mean. The guy who did
"The Thinker" and "The Kiss".
Some of the work looked a lot like something you might have done.
Ever think of doing bronze?
Your friend,
Jurgen

The pieces at the Art of African Canadians Exhibit are emotionally
touching. I felt like a kid at a candy store and cannot touch or
take home. Of course, I'm speaking about the exhibits.

Hello Dorsey
I was the one who interrogated you as you worked on one of your
pieces recently, about to be installed outdoors. Within a few days
of our meeting, I went to the park you mentioned to view the truly
enchanted forest you have created. What wonderful living art! I
can't believe I haven't known about it, but like many mysteries,
the time has to be right and the student has to be ready. I am now
determined to share the beauty of your work with all visitors to
the area and I am so thrilled to know it is close by for contemplation
and enjoyment.
Please, please carry on with the work you are doing.

Hello Dorsey
It has been a very long time (20 years?) since we have met. Glad
to see you still are producing excellent work. You used to bring
the pictures of your work into my Japan Camera for developing and
for some reason thoughts of you popped into my head.
Like I stated, glad to see you are still true to your work as we
discussed so many years ago.
Take care.

Dear Mr. James
I already sent an e-mail, didn't think to sign the guest book. Just
wanted to say that your work still inspires me and that I talk about
the myths and the stories that you would share in class as you were
creating one of your pieces. Your classes were fun and I learned
alot. Certain things you told us have stuck with me and I can recall
them verbatim (don't worry - good things only)
If you would, e-mail me with any upcoming shows that are in the
GTA - I would love to attend one.

do. I just wanted to thank you for that.

Mr James, glad to see you are well. I attended MDHS for two years'77-79
9when we moved back to the US) and had the wonderful experience
of having you as an instructor. Getting us to relax as a class,
teasing me for entertaining in the back of the room.
You were carving a greek god(if my mythology was better Id remember
who: Zeus made himself into a swan to woo a woman and the offspring
hatched from an egg and that was your carving). Anyway, I stayed
in creative arts and have been making a living as a commercial photographer
for as long as I can remember.
To sum it up, I just wanted to say thanks .

Thank you for permitting others to reflect in the beauty that you
create. It certainly has touched me more deeply than much of the
art that I have seen. I am a little concerned about cracks appearing
in one of the sculptures in Robertson Park. I realize that outdoor
artwork has a limited life but feel that these works deserve to
be viewed and appreciated for many years to come. I hear that there
will be signage up in the fall hopefully but surely by the spring
at the latest so that all your viewers will know to whom their appreciation
should be addressed. Sorry, didn't mean to babble on. Do take care
of yourself.
Again, thank you. sincerely Joan

Thank you for your tour of the Guild Inn grounds today! Your stories

sculptures. It was the perfect way to spend a beautifully sunny Saturday
afternoon. My thanks.

Amazing - Looking at the scuplture on your site you have managed
the impossible. The pieces are somehow invigorating and stimulating
while conveying peace and tranquility. One can't feel both at the
same time yet I did when viewing your sculpture. That was inspired
to take the pictures of "Spirit Song" in a rain storm. You were
right it added depth and assisted in letting the message be heard.
You bring to mind two sayings so I leave them both to congraulate
you.
Creativity is allowing yourself to make
mistakes. Art is knowing which ones
to keep.(Scott Adams)
Fine art is that in which the hand, the
head and the heart of man go together.
(John Ruskin)
I truly look forward to hearing you speak on April 27 before The
Guild Renaissance Group.

I'm glad to have found your web site. I have admired your work (at
least what I remembered of it) from what I saw displayed in the
Scarborough Civic Centre when I was working there as a summer student
many years ago. It was brief, but it really stuck in my mind and
I'm glad that I can admire it again on the Internet.
I especially love your use of mythological subject, beautiful smooth
curves, and rich, lively wood as a material.
