Pan and Syrinx
This couple from Greek fmythology is carved from black walnut
wood. It measures roughly 11in high by 22in wide by 5in deep.
Pan wanted Syrinx to be his lover but she was not interested.
He decided to abduct her. He chased her through the woods and
was gaining on her when she prayed to the gods and her father
to protect her from the ravenous advances of Pan. They heard
her prayer and changed her into a bundle of reeds. Pan was so
sadened that he could not have the object of his affections
that he took some of those reeds and fashioned from them the
well known Pans reeds or Pans flute. This is why Pan plays such
sad tunes on his reeds.
